Art Meister Ranks 2nd in Division at Any Baby Can’s Walk for Autism

April 22, 2017 — Any Baby Can’s 13th Annual Walk for Autism is an Official Fiesta® San Antonio event that helps support families raising individuals with autism. Art Meister, REALTOR® here at Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper, REALTORS® participated in this year’s event.

Art finished 2nd in his division with a time of 30:15 for the 5k (3.2) miles. Originally his goal was to finish in under 30 minutes. He attributes the extra 15 seconds it took to complete on the Double Double at In and Out Burger with clients. Well, Art, I think those Double Double’s would add at least 15 seconds on most people’s run.

“What a great cause,” says Art, “I’m so thankful and grateful that I can support and survive something like this at this point in my life.”

The race kicked off at 8:00 am with a Superhero 5k where many participants donned their favorite superhero costumes. The walk began shortly after at 9:00 am. Crowds showed their support by making banners, signs and creating team T-shirts. In addition, families, and attendees enjoyed delicious food trucks, activities, and family-friendly performances.

Thank you, Art, for bringing us this wonderful story, as well as sharing photos. Cheers on achieving 2nd place in your division and supporting Any Baby Can at their fantastic annual event.

Any Baby Can is a local non-profit agency whose mission is to care for families who have a child or youth with a chronic illness, disability, developmental delay or any special need. Last year Any Baby Can provided services to over 3,600 families and touched close to 9,000 individual lives. This year, Any Baby Can expanded its age criteria to better serve the San Antonio and surrounding area communities. They now provide services to children through 17 years of age.

The support and participation of everyone with every company in this years FORE! Any Baby Can Golf Tournament keeps Any Baby Can from never turning a family away, as for so many, Any Baby Can is the last resort for assistance. The services are at no cost to the family and income is not a factor for assistance.

14650142_1200498186678453_875127907325411786_nAt dinner Debbie Kreiger spoke about the experience and many programs offer to her family through Any Baby Can. When her son, Jeffery, was 14 years old he was diagnosed with various medical conditions. Debbie came to Any Baby Can in 2015. The Krieger’s benefited from such services as the Autism Program and Case Management.

A special thank you to all of the supporters for the contributions and items donated to the raffle and contests including a flat screen TV, jersey signed by Tony Parker, La Cantera hotel stay and round of golf for 4!

Rains pelted the visitors in varying frequency but that did not deter that huge crowd that appeared to enjoy the festivities. Any Baby Can thanked the City of Helotes, distributors, vendors and the many sponsors, including Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper, REALTORS®, that joined in supporting this effort to bring awareness to Autism.

12987172_686306961472577_6375441096212707446_nParticipants warmed up with some Zumba, while News 4 WOAI-TV’s Michael Garofalo emceeed the event. Fiesta royalty, Darren Casey Rey Feo LXVlll, kicked off this year’s walk. Nicholas “Nico” LaHood has truly been a champion in the cause to raising Autism Awareness and attended the event with his family, pictured left.

Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper, REALTORS® is already planning for next year’s Walk for Autism at their new location in Helotes’ Cornyval Grounds. Nearly 5,000 made it out this year, in the rain, so we’re excited to giveaway even more FREE prizes next year and doubling our participation. Our “Spin 2 Win” wheel was the highlight for many families who landed on the FREE cotton candy spot. Cotton Candy Creationz was both giving out cotton candy prizes to our winners, plus selling many delicious flavors. Half of the proceeds from the cotton candy sales were donated directly to Any Baby Can. In addition to prizes, beads and laughs we shared information about the upcoming FORE! Any Baby Can Golf Tournament, set to take place in October.

We wanted to send out a special thank you to all those #TeamCBHarper folks who volunteered their time, as well as all those who donated to our team. Many thanks to those who stopped by our booth to spin the wheel of prizes, we hope to see you again next year!

A Word from Any Baby Can’s CEO:

This is Hugo Hernandez and I wanted to take this time to personally thank you for registering for our 12th Annual Walk for Autism. If you haven’t registered yet, then I’d like to invite you to join us!

I have been asked multiple times why we moved San Antonio’s Walk for Autism away from the AT&T Center and I felt that I should answer this question for everyone who has supported The Walk for Autism the past 11 years. We went through an exhaustive search of locations throughout Bexar County. We were looking for a place that was cost-effective, would hold over 5,000 people, was inviting to families and had plenty of free parking. We found two places in the downtown area that somewhat fit what we needed but both did not have free parking. Parents would have to pay $10 – $20 for parking and this was just unacceptable.

A friend of Any Baby Can suggested The Cornyval Grounds because of its park-like feel and ample parking. When we first arrived, it reminded us of our days at Brackenridge Park – the mature trees, grassy areas, picnic tables, and large gazebo. The staff of our autism services visited the location to assess the appropriateness for our children and youth on the autism spectrum and they loved it. Frances Ramirez stated, “This feels like home to me.” Elisa Luna and Frances both gave their blessing on the new location as the founders of the Walk for Autism. They were pleased that we would not have to increase the registration fee (it has been $15 since 2005) and would not have to charge our families for parking.

The other benefit of the location is that once we sign the paperwork, we are guaranteed to have the location for the day we chose. With the AT&T Center, we were at the mercy of the Spurs playoff schedule and The Walk for Autism could be cancelled if the Spurs had an early playoff game on that day. This information was usually not available to us until mid-March, you can imagine this caused a lot of anxiety for all involved. The other benefit is that the new location is $12,000 less than the AT&T Center. This gives us $12,000 that can go back into the autism programs to support families with parent education, autism toolkits, medications, food, counseling, utilities, sensory items, exercise equipment, and much more.

My goal as the new President/CEO is to support the staff and provide the best services possible to the many families that come to Any Baby Can. I am also focusing on honoring the past and building on the great work that has been accomplished by the many people that came before me in all of the many roles at Any Baby Can. In my goal to honor the past, I am looking for a few parents to serve on an Autism Advisory Committee that can help shape the services we provide and the future direction of San Antonio’s Walk for Autism. I invite those of you who had a place on the Walk Committee in the past to come back and provide us your wisdom, knowledge, and direction.

Please call or email to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
I look forward to see you all at San Antonio’s 12th Annual Walk for Autism!

By turning giving into a shared region-wide experience, we can significantly impact the future of South Central Texas and make a huge collective difference. Last year’s event raised over $2,000,000 for 467 participating agencies!

The Big Give S.A. is part of the national day of giving called Give Local America. Communities across the country are coming together on May 5th.

The goals of The Big Give S.A. are to:

  • INVEST strategically in Bexar and surrounding county nonprofits
  • DRIVE our community forward through collective impact
  • LEVERAGE giving with matching funds and prize incentives

How does a charity participate?

Any 501(c)(3) organization in Atacosa, Bandera, Bexar, Comal, Frio, Gillespie, Guadalupe, Karnes, Kendall, Kerr, Medina, or Wilson  county is welcome to participate in The Big Give S.A. Nonprofit registration closes April 10, 2015. There is no fee to participate. An eligible organization will have one profile on The Big Give S.A. site. While the organizational description can include all of the agency’s programs and services, donors cannot designate or restrict their donations to a particular program. Each participating nonprofit is eligible for matching funds and prize incentives. If you missed the chance to sign up this year, please mark your calendars for 2016!

How do individuals participate?

On May 5, anyone can make an online gift to a participating organization. All donations on May 5 give your favorite nonprofit the opportunity to earn matching funds and prize incentives. This means that your gift has the capacity to leverage additional funding.  You can give by smart phone, tablet, or computer. Minimum donation is $10. There is not a maximum donation.

We Joined Over 5,000 in Any Baby Can’s Official Fiesta® Walk for Autism

Saturday, April 18th —  Was the culmination of our team #TEAMCBHarper joining together with 5,000 others to support awareness of children and families with Autism at Any Baby Can’s 11159983_884037211657887_657893490892575015_nFiesta. This annual family event was also attended by many notable guests including Senator Carlos Uresti who served as Rey Familia of Any Baby Can’s Fiesta. Also Chief of Police Anthony Treviño was in attendance along with many of San Antonio’s first responders as a part of Fiesta de Los Jefes. Fiesta de Los Jefes featured 26 interactive displays and community programs from the San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department. It was a great opportunity for families to learn about items such as Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), fire safety and more.

D’Ann Harper, Board Chair of Any Baby Can, spoke about the importance of family, community, and supporting one another in creating awareness about families with members who are on the Autism spectrum. Any Baby Can provides numerous free services to those families including counseling services, case management, sibling support, health & wellness programs, prescription assistance and educational materials.10623097_884051084989833_8615012729306247373_n

We were proud to sponsor the Avina family who also joined us early Saturday morning amidst the crowd of over 5,000 other attendees. The rain cleared and held off to allow us to enjoy the food, live music, and carnival style games of the day. Fun activities and interactives included inflatable bouncers, face painting, puppies from the Animal Defense League—all dogs found a loving home, tricycles from Monarch Academy and a special area called Rudy’s Playground—a space where organizations provided adaptive activities for individuals of all ages and abilities. On top of the Fiesta® décor, attendees enjoyed breakfast tacos, sausage wraps and other traditional Fiesta foods.

Proceeds from this event will continue to stay in our community to support families raising children with autism and other special healthcare needs and support families who have lost a child. As an agency, Any Baby Can continues to respond to the ever-growing needs of families raising children with special health care needs: autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and ADHD; and also provide support to families that have lost a child.

We are looking forward to next year’s event, be sure to save-the-date April 16th 2016.

Any Baby Can’s Fiesta (Walk for Autism)

WHO WE ARE

Every family needs a place to call home, especially children. By helping people find their way home, we work to change lives everyday.

We are more than just a brokerage and a real estate company, we’re a team of individuals. Each of us have children and families we care deeply about. The relationships we’ve formed with one another only enhances our compassion for others. Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper REALTORS has actively supported Any Baby Can each year to benefit the families and children affected by autism. In previous years, groups of our staff attended the Walk for Autism as a show of encouragement in raising awareness and urging greater support. This year we wanted to remove the spotlight from ourselves and highlight what this is really about – the voices and faces of real families and children in our community.

With the help of the Any Baby Can staff, we were put in touch with a family that displays both strength and kindness. Mr. Rene & Betania Avina have five children, each on the spectrum of autism – but this does not indicate a tragedy. 20150131_151227_resizedIt is instead a chance to see these beautiful children as empowered, unique and able to offer their own gifts. Navigating the range of emotions and challenges as a parent can be difficult. Let us convey to the parents of these children that they are not alone. Many like the Avina family, greatly depend on the success of these events to continue providing them with the emotional, financial and educational support they need to carry them through the challenges of caring for a child or children with chronic illnesses, disabilities or developmental delays.

Through your generous support we can do just that. We are so happy to announce that the Avina family is scheduled to attend with us, free of charge. This is an wonderful family experience for the whole family with live music, Fiesta food, carnival style games, dunking booth and much more!

ABOUT AUTISM

Autism is a spectrum disorder that encompasses a wide range of conditions, symptoms and experiences. The below clip of a film produced by Marisabel Fernandez and Alexander Bernard, was designed to evoke part of the sensory perspective of a non-verbal child with autism.

This is not a universal to everyone on the autism spectrum, there are those considered “high-functioning”. At it’s core this condition is now called ASD, autism spectrum disorder due to the wide array of variances. It is a brain disorder in which communication and interaction with others are difficult. Unlike people with other forms of autism, people with high-functioning autism or Asperger’s syndrome want to be involved with other. They simply don’t know how to go about it. They may not be able to understand others’ emotions. Reading facial expressions or body language can be a challenge for them. As a result, they may be teased and often feel like social outcasts. The unwanted social isolation can lead to anxiety and depression. It is for this very reason that the support of family and friends is so critical. Additionally the understanding and empathy of us as a community is imperative. By changing our thinking and assisting schools, families and other outlets we can positively impact the lives of all these children and families affected by this outwardly invisible disorder.
