Art Meister Ranks 2nd in Division at Any Baby Can’s Walk for Autism

April 22, 2017 — Any Baby Can’s 13th Annual Walk for Autism is an Official Fiesta® San Antonio event that helps support families raising individuals with autism. Art Meister, REALTOR® here at Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper, REALTORS® participated in this year’s event.

Art finished 2nd in his division with a time of 30:15 for the 5k (3.2) miles. Originally his goal was to finish in under 30 minutes. He attributes the extra 15 seconds it took to complete on the Double Double at In and Out Burger with clients. Well, Art, I think those Double Double’s would add at least 15 seconds on most people’s run.

“What a great cause,” says Art, “I’m so thankful and grateful that I can support and survive something like this at this point in my life.”

The race kicked off at 8:00 am with a Superhero 5k where many participants donned their favorite superhero costumes. The walk began shortly after at 9:00 am. Crowds showed their support by making banners, signs and creating team T-shirts. In addition, families, and attendees enjoyed delicious food trucks, activities, and family-friendly performances.

Thank you, Art, for bringing us this wonderful story, as well as sharing photos. Cheers on achieving 2nd place in your division and supporting Any Baby Can at their fantastic annual event.

A Word from Any Baby Can’s CEO:

This is Hugo Hernandez and I wanted to take this time to personally thank you for registering for our 12th Annual Walk for Autism. If you haven’t registered yet, then I’d like to invite you to join us!

I have been asked multiple times why we moved San Antonio’s Walk for Autism away from the AT&T Center and I felt that I should answer this question for everyone who has supported The Walk for Autism the past 11 years. We went through an exhaustive search of locations throughout Bexar County. We were looking for a place that was cost-effective, would hold over 5,000 people, was inviting to families and had plenty of free parking. We found two places in the downtown area that somewhat fit what we needed but both did not have free parking. Parents would have to pay $10 – $20 for parking and this was just unacceptable.

A friend of Any Baby Can suggested The Cornyval Grounds because of its park-like feel and ample parking. When we first arrived, it reminded us of our days at Brackenridge Park – the mature trees, grassy areas, picnic tables, and large gazebo. The staff of our autism services visited the location to assess the appropriateness for our children and youth on the autism spectrum and they loved it. Frances Ramirez stated, “This feels like home to me.” Elisa Luna and Frances both gave their blessing on the new location as the founders of the Walk for Autism. They were pleased that we would not have to increase the registration fee (it has been $15 since 2005) and would not have to charge our families for parking.

The other benefit of the location is that once we sign the paperwork, we are guaranteed to have the location for the day we chose. With the AT&T Center, we were at the mercy of the Spurs playoff schedule and The Walk for Autism could be cancelled if the Spurs had an early playoff game on that day. This information was usually not available to us until mid-March, you can imagine this caused a lot of anxiety for all involved. The other benefit is that the new location is $12,000 less than the AT&T Center. This gives us $12,000 that can go back into the autism programs to support families with parent education, autism toolkits, medications, food, counseling, utilities, sensory items, exercise equipment, and much more.

My goal as the new President/CEO is to support the staff and provide the best services possible to the many families that come to Any Baby Can. I am also focusing on honoring the past and building on the great work that has been accomplished by the many people that came before me in all of the many roles at Any Baby Can. In my goal to honor the past, I am looking for a few parents to serve on an Autism Advisory Committee that can help shape the services we provide and the future direction of San Antonio’s Walk for Autism. I invite those of you who had a place on the Walk Committee in the past to come back and provide us your wisdom, knowledge, and direction.

Please call or email to discuss any questions or concerns you may have.
I look forward to see you all at San Antonio’s 12th Annual Walk for Autism!
“Side by side every step of the way”

We Joined Over 5,000 in Any Baby Can’s Official Fiesta® Walk for Autism

Saturday, April 18th —  Was the culmination of our team #TEAMCBHarper joining together with 5,000 others to support awareness of children and families with Autism at Any Baby Can’s 11159983_884037211657887_657893490892575015_nFiesta. This annual family event was also attended by many notable guests including Senator Carlos Uresti who served as Rey Familia of Any Baby Can’s Fiesta. Also Chief of Police Anthony Treviño was in attendance along with many of San Antonio’s first responders as a part of Fiesta de Los Jefes. Fiesta de Los Jefes featured 26 interactive displays and community programs from the San Antonio Fire Department and San Antonio Police Department. It was a great opportunity for families to learn about items such as Emergency Medical Services (EMS), Special Weapons And Tactics (SWAT), fire safety and more.

D’Ann Harper, Board Chair of Any Baby Can, spoke about the importance of family, community, and supporting one another in creating awareness about families with members who are on the Autism spectrum. Any Baby Can provides numerous free services to those families including counseling services, case management, sibling support, health & wellness programs, prescription assistance and educational materials.10623097_884051084989833_8615012729306247373_n

We were proud to sponsor the Avina family who also joined us early Saturday morning amidst the crowd of over 5,000 other attendees. The rain cleared and held off to allow us to enjoy the food, live music, and carnival style games of the day. Fun activities and interactives included inflatable bouncers, face painting, puppies from the Animal Defense League—all dogs found a loving home, tricycles from Monarch Academy and a special area called Rudy’s Playground—a space where organizations provided adaptive activities for individuals of all ages and abilities. On top of the Fiesta® décor, attendees enjoyed breakfast tacos, sausage wraps and other traditional Fiesta foods.

Proceeds from this event will continue to stay in our community to support families raising children with autism and other special healthcare needs and support families who have lost a child. As an agency, Any Baby Can continues to respond to the ever-growing needs of families raising children with special health care needs: autism, cerebral palsy, Down syndrome and ADHD; and also provide support to families that have lost a child.

We are looking forward to next year’s event, be sure to save-the-date April 16th 2016.
