Local Chapter of NAGLREP Opens In San Antonio

Part business and part advocacy, the National Association of Gay and Lesbian Real Estate Professional (NAGLREP) is a non-profit organization founded by Jeff Berger. With more than 2,100 members, the business sector of the NAGLREP shares a Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender (LGBT) allied REALTOR® referral network. Additionally, they provide services to over 75,000 LGBT and non LGBT home buyers and sellers. This growing network also includes mortgage professionals, title agents, insurance agents, commercial agents, home inspectors, trainers, and educators. Moreover, NAGLREP advocates for the rights of the LGBT community as it relates to housing and discrimination laws. NAGLREP has grown to more than 30 chapters and is one of the nation’s largest LGBT trade organizations.

Jamie Zapata, REALTOR® and NAGLREP current member, was determined to bring a chapter to San Antonio. Jamie is one of 15 local members and an advocate in the community. She worked with Jeff Berger, local real estate professional, and other NAGLREP members to facilitate the formation of NAGLREP San Antonio. As founding President of the local chapter, Jamie will work to select a leadership committee, engage the local REALTOR® association and NGLCC affiliate chapter, and plan events for 2019.

I have been hearing from LGBTQ+ friends, other agents, and clients about discrimination and poor treatment by neighbors, agents, brokers, lenders, title company reps, etc., and it truly breaks my heart,” says Jamie “I know that I can now be that voice for change and speak up for people who may not be able to speak for themselves.”

Quoting the January NAGLREP newsletter: “Housing discrimination is not the only area NAGLREP will focus on in 2019. Freddie Mac’s report, “The LGBT Community: Buying and Renting Homes, shows that the LGBT home ownership rate is just 49%, far below the national figure of 64%. Discrimination is playing a role in keeping these numbers low. Forty-six percent of LGBT renters surveyed feared discrimination in the home buying process, while 13% of LGBT homeowners indicated they experienced it.”

NAGLREP membership is open to all real estate industry professionals who are interested in serving the LGBTQ+ community and provides an opportunity to embrace diversity, not only through words, but through actions.

Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper, REALTORS® is, and always has been home to diversity. This diversity is not just limited to race or age, but includes gender, gender identity, sexual orientation and open-ended acceptance. The dream of home ownership knows no limits. Nearly fifty years after the Fair Housing Acting was enacted in the United States the LGBTQ+ community is still striving for equality. When companies like Coldwell Banker D’Ann Harper, REALTORS® lead by example, it encourages others in the real estate industry to treat others with respect and dignity.
