Although the Lone Star State isn’t really known for its beaches, the Gulf Coast is a welcome sight for sand-and-sea enthusiasts. While there are many beaches to choose from along the Texas coast, these two have been longtime favorites for generations:
1. South Padre Island
This small, family-friendly island is a tourist destination, but it also offers one of the best places to watch an abundance of wildlife such as dolphins and sea turtles. South Padre Island placed as second “Best Beach in Texas” by USA Today’s 2018 Readers Choice Awards. The island offers residents an array of bars, restaurants, and parks.

With a small-town charm and a friendly population, Rockport is considered one of the cleanest beaches in the state. Rockport was named “Best Beach in Texas” by USA Today’s 2018 Readers Choice Awards, as well as one of the “Best Places to Retire in Texas” by Niche.com (#56 out of 697). Life in Rockport offers residents a variety of marine recreation such as boating, fishing (bay, offshore, wade, beach, and pier), duck hunting, swimming, and bird watching. The area is especially popular with retirees.
